A Trophy Right Out Of The Gate

This past July 3rd, I was sitting in the shop.  With the high water and all, business was slow as it had been since spring. I was considering closing up early when a young guy and his girlfriend walked in. We talked and he instantly struck me as an avid outdoorsman. I could tell Dustin was well versed in hunting and fishing. He told me that he had been fishing with a spin fishing guide on a family vacation for a couple of days, but he wanted to learn to fly fish. He'd caught fish with using every other method and wanted to learn something new. He wound up buying a rod and reel and a few basic flies. I took him out back and gave him some basic casting instruction, and like I said being an avid outdoorsman already, terms like "loading the rod" weren't foreign to him so he caught on quickly. I knew in the back of mind that he wasn't gonna be able to fish with the river running around the clock unless he got in a boat. Like I said, it was the 4th of July, we had friends and family in town, I had planned on being off, and all my other guides were booked solid. But I could tell he really wanted to fish, and for a minute I remembered what it was like when I first got the bug. So I agreed to take him out the next afternoon. That next afternoon we ran down to the top of Long Hole, I swung it around and jumped on the oars. Dustin picked his rod up and had obvioulsy been practicing the night before. We were fishing 9 foot deep with a Ruby Midge dropped off an apricot egg under a Thingamabobber with a pretty significant hunk of lead to get it down. He shot that baby out there like he'd been doing it all his life. Within 60 seconds that indicator went down and he set the hook on this 20" brown. I was driving down the road today and got a text of this replica mount he made of it. Really brightened my day up and made me appreciate what I do for a living, which is making memories. Cheers, and see y'all on the river.
